What Happens When Spouses Need Different Levels of Care? One Couple’s Experience at The Arlington of Naples

Nov 6, 2026 | Life at The Arlington, Resident Perspectives

Many couples exploring senior living share the same concern: What happens if one spouse needs more care than the other?

It’s a common question, and for many families, it’s one of the biggest factors in deciding where to move. The good news is that at a Life Plan Community, also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), spouses can often receive different levels of care while remaining on the same campus and continuing to spend meaningful time together.

For John Campbell, The Arlington of Naples offered something invaluable: the peace of mind that comes from knowing his wife is receiving exceptional care in assisted living while allowing him to focus on what matters most: being her husband. That reassurance can be especially meaningful for older adults navigating changing health needs. In fact, recent research from the National Alliance for Caregiving found that nearly two-thirds of family caregivers report moderate to high emotional stress.

With his wife receiving assisted living support and John living independently nearby, they are able to spend quality time together while remaining closely connected. Their experience shows how a Life Plan Community can help couples receive personalized support while preserving their relationships during every stage of life.

Can Couples Stay Together When They Need Different Levels of Care?

One of the advantages of a Life Plan Community is access to a continuum of care. Rather than having to relocate to a different community when health needs change, residents have access to care when they need it, just a few steps from each other.

For John, that meant being able to move into independent living while his wife remained in assisted living.

“I decided that living here, in independent living, would allow me to spend much more time with my wife,” John said. “I can visit her several times a day. Usually, I wheel her up to my apartment and we have supper together, watch TV, chat and hang out for a few hours almost every day.”

According to Robbi Cleveland, director of marketing at The Arlington, this is one of the most meaningful benefits of a Life Plan Community.

“The benefit of living at The Arlington is that we have all levels of care under one roof,” she said. “He can live a very independent life while knowing his wife is receiving the care she needs. At the same time, it’s just a short walk away for them to spend time together like they always have.”

For many couples, maintaining that closeness can provide comfort, continuity and peace of mind during life’s transitions.

The Peace of Mind That Comes with Care

When a spouse requires support, family caregivers often find themselves balancing daily responsibilities with concern for their loved one’s well-being.

For John, knowing his wife is receiving personalized care has provided reassurance.

“They’ve done a great job with my wife,” he said. “It gives me relief that if I have to go shopping or head back to Marco Island for a club activity, I know she’s well cared for. She’s safe and comfortable, and I’m very glad for that.”

He also appreciates knowing trained team members are available whenever assistance is needed. Robbi says this is another advantage families often overlook.

“They know the providers here, and they’re able to see the quality of care every day because they’re visiting their loved one regularly,” she said.

Does Moving to Senior Living Mean Giving Up Your Lifestyle?

For many older adults, the answer is no. In fact, one of John’s biggest concerns before moving was maintaining the friendships, activities and connections he had enjoyed for years on Marco Island.

Instead, he discovered a move to The Arlington allowed him to maintain those relationships while gaining additional support and convenience.

“Being a resident of The Arlington, you don’t give up Marco Island,” John said. “You keep your friends, you keep your clubs, you keep your church, you keep your volunteer activities.”

As the closest Life Plan Community to Marco Island, The Arlington allows residents to stay connected to the island lifestyle while benefiting from a full continuum of care.

John remains active with his church, is a member of the Marco Island Shrine Club and Marco Island Men’s Club, and stays connected to the friendships he built during more than a decade on Marco Island. He recently hosted a gathering for fellow church members at The Arlington, including nearly 20 members of his congregation who also live in the community.

“The Arlington to me was a good fit for being a Marco Island resident and keeping Marco Island in my life,” he said.

How Maintenance-Free Living Creates More Time for What Matters

Another benefit John didn’t anticipate was how much time he would gain. Before moving, he was managing household responsibilities on his own while supporting his wife. Today, many of those responsibilities have disappeared. Instead of focusing on chores and home upkeep, he spends more time doing the things he values most.

“Every maintenance project is done for you with a simple phone call,” John said. “I have a chance to spend more time with my wife than I did before.

Planning for the Future Without Sacrificing Independence

A common misconception about senior living is that moving to a community means losing independence.

Robbi sees it differently. “I always tell people it’s not what you’re giving up; it’s what you’re gaining,” she said. “Everything we do in independent living is designed to help residents stay independent longer.”

John’s experience reflects that philosophy. He continues to enjoy an active lifestyle, stay connected with friends and family and participate in the activities he loves, all while having confidence that additional care is available when needed.

For couples facing changing health needs, that combination of independence, support and togetherness can be invaluable.

“It’s not uncommon as you get older to have one spouse decline,” John said. “The thing about The Arlington is you can live in different lifestyles but still be very, very connected and just minutes away from each other.”
