Carol Musser’s Remarkable Athletic Journey Demonstrates the Power of Community Support
The Arlington resident Carol Musser is just four races away from achieving an extraordinary goal: completing 100 races by Thanksgiving Day 2025. At 84 years old, the accomplished racewalker has overcome significant health challenges while pursuing her athletic dreams with unwavering support from The Arlington community.
Musser began her athletic journey at age 60, having never participated in physical activities before. Her first race was a half-marathon completed in a sleet storm on April Fool’s Day – an experience that convinced her she could accomplish anything. Twenty years later, she has competed in half marathons, 5Ks, and specialized racewalking competitions across the country.
“I started by just walking outside my door and training for that first race,” said Musser. “If I could survive that sleet storm, I knew I could do anything.”
Her journey has been marked by remarkable resilience. Despite battling four different types of cancer, leukemia, and having her left arm bone removed, Musser has persevered toward her century mark. She credits her late husband as her greatest supporter, serving as her coach, driver, and cheerleader until his passing five years ago during COVID-19.
The Arlington has provided crucial support throughout her pursuit. Fellow residents regularly celebrate her achievements, and she’s found particular strength in the Linden Ladies, a group of 11–12 women who live on the same street who meet weekly for mutual support. Musser often races on holidays, then returns to join community celebrations, where residents eagerly ask about her performance.
“The community here knows about my goal and they’re always asking how I did,” Musser explained. “Having that support makes all the difference.”
Musser’s remaining races include competitions at local venues and the unique Naples Airport runway race, where the airport closes its runway for participants to race alongside aircrafts. Her 100th race will be the GCR Thanksgiving 5K on Thanksgiving Day, when she’ll advance to a new age category – 85 and above.
A surgeon once told Musser that her excellent physical condition saved her life during emergency surgery, reinforcing her commitment to staying active. The Arlington’s fitness center and expert instruction help maintain her conditioning between races.
Musser’s story challenges perceptions about aging and demonstrates how supportive communities enable residents to achieve remarkable goals regardless of life’s obstacles.
